Marwar Festival Jodhpur- Festival that Celebrates Heroism of Rajputs

Jodhpur, the second largest city in the Indian state of Rajasthan, was a former capital and a powerful kingdom of Marwar. It is a famous tourist destination; there are also numerous palaces, temples, and forts like in other parts of Rajasthan.

However, the main attractions in this region are the festivals and fairs they celebrate on a grand scale. During September and October, the whole city dances to the vibrant music and celebration colors.
The city’s inhabitants are massive believers in mythology and legends, so the festivals they observe are mainly for the gods and goddesses and even commemorate brave medieval heroes. The Marwar festival, Jodhpur, is an example of such enthusiasm for the love of long-lived heroes. It is entirely devoted to the music and dance of the the Marwar area.

Rao Jodha established the city of Marwar in 1459 A.D; he was the chief of one of the Rajput tribes and believed to be the descendents of Lord Ram. The Rajasthani Rajputs are known for their courageous nature and their battlefield stories. Rajputs have made a mark in the history of India that encourages bravery and loyalty, still known through folk songs.

Jodhpur, also known as the Blue City, recalls the heroes of Rajasthan each year. It is celebrated in the Hindu month of Aswin, which falls between September- October. The festival is entirely devoted to the music and dance of the Marwar area, no wonder it was initially known as the “maand” festival.

Maand implies the traditional folk music that reminds the love and romance of the Rajputs of the time. The celebration is set during the full moon of Sharad Poornima. The Marwar festival, Jodhpur, lasts for two days.

Main Attractions of the Festival :

  • The festival’s main venue is the famous Mehrangarh and Mandore Fort, Umaid Bhawan palace, which transforms into a huge stage for the performances.
  • The Marwar festival, Jodhpur, displays the city’s culture and art with the Marwar region’s dance and songs.
  • The main subject of the festivity becomes the folk music, which talks about the love life of the olden Rajasthani rulers. The dance and the songs are performed with great zeal and excellence, bringing the legends back to life.
  • Other activities that attract visitors are Camel Tattoo Show, Horse Riding, Magic Shows, Puppet Shows, and Horse polo. Various other competitions are also held during this time.

  • Shopping in the busy markets of Jodhpur is a great experience; the place cells leather shoes, colorful bags, tie and dye fabrics, and other ethnic things.
  • Visit the palaces all over Jodhpur for their magnificence and designs.
  • Dine in the palace restaurant and visit the famous sweet shops.
  • 7 km from Jodhpur is a Balsamand Lake and a Palace for a short picnic.
  • Even at Mandore, 8 km from Jodhpur on the outskirts, they celebrate the Marwar Festival. Mandore is a place of great historical importance, and the Hall of Heroes is a must-visit.
