Mehrangarh Fort History

Built by Rao Jodha (the founder of Jodhpur) in 1459, Mehrangarh Fort is known for its beautiful architecture. The fort was built atop Bhaucheeria Hill, only 9 kilometers from Mandore.

Since the Sun was the primary deity of the Rathores and “Mehran” means “sun,” the fort was given the name Mehrangarh Fort. The previous Jodhpur kings, including Maldeo Maharaja, Ajit Singh Maharaja, Takhat Singh, and Maharaja Hanwant Singh, added much to the original building.

Best Time to Visit Mehrangarh Fort

Heritage temples inside Mehrangarh Fort

The sprawling complex of the Mehrangarh fort houses the royal temples which once served as the family temples of the Rathore dynasty. At the extreme right of the fort complex lies the historic Nagnechiji temple.

Just adjacent to it is the Chamunda Devi temple, which is dedicated to Goddess Durga. After a gunpowder explosion in the 18th century, the temple was reconstructed by the ruler Takhat Singh.
