A very peaceful and pleasant attraction in Kochi, Kodanad Elephant Sanctuary is a must-visit place for animal lovers. It is also called Kodanad Elephant training centre where these giant creatures are loved, groomed, and revered with utmost care and respect. Why? Elephants are considered as auspicious animals in Kerala where no major festival or celebration is complete without a massive elephant procession.
Situated near Perumbavoor on the banks of Periyar River in the Ernakulam District (Kochi), Kodanad is one of the popular training centres for elephants. It is the place where the newly captured elephants are sheltered for training.
Back in 1950-60s, Kodanad was known as one of the largest elephant training centres where these giant creatures were captured in the Malayattoor forests and trained at Kodanad. Later in the year 1970, capturing of elephants was banned by the Government of India. Since then, Kodanad is used as a rescue training centre for elephants.
