This sanctuary hosts at about 5,000 species of crocodiles. On the way towards Mahabalipuram, the sanctuary makes the homeland for crocodiles.

In the area of 3.2 hectares the pools and the water sides are transformed into the breading ground for the crocodiles and alligators. Tourists can visit the banks and observe these reptiles very closely. The sanctuary was established by Romulve Whittaaker. In this bank there are various species of Indian and African crocodiles. The Crocodile Bank of Chennai was founded in the year 1976 and it is managed by board of trustees.

The crocodile bank was started with 30 mugger adults and now the number crossed 5,000. School children, tourists from other states and locals also visit to have a close look at the endangered reptiles. Special demonstration and sessions are arranged for the tourists and the school children.

Chennai is the nearest airport which is connected by both domestic and international flights. Chengalpattu is the nearest railhead. Tourists can avail the road route as daily buses ply from Pondicherry, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, and Chennai to Mahabalipuram.
