We were covering the last distance of the Nellore - Chennai highway, to watch the varied flora and fauna that the sanctuary promises. The flamingoes are a major attraction of the park.

Pulicat Sanctuary Andhra Pradesh consists of the second largest water lagoon in India and provides breeding ground for a large number of migratory birds for whom the backwater gives way to an ideal setting. It is drained by Swarnamukhi and Kalangir River.

Some of the birds that you might catch sight of, while on the sanctuary are, the Painted Storks, Open Billed Storks, Grey Herons, Cormorants, White Ibis, Spoon Bills, Egrets, Reef Herons, Spot Billed Ducks etc.

Pulicat Sanctuary Andhra Pradesh also houses the sixty five different species of fishes, and many reptiles, which have made this place their breeding ground. The adjoining villages and islands depend on the lake water of Pulicat in some way or the other.

If you want to spend a quiet night under the open sky of Pulicat, we recommend you to put up in one of the inspection bungalows in Sulurpet.

The best season to visit this sanctuary is from October to March.
