It is said that the Khasis of Meghalaya used to perform religious rituals here to commemorate Chan-Ubleis. Thus, the lake was formerly called Chan-U Lei-dubi. As the years passed, the local Rabha –Kachari tribes of Assam referred to this lake as Chan-dubi.

Another legend says that a famous merchant named Chanda Sadasgar used this lake as a transit point to reach the Kulsi River with his merchandise to the neighboring state of Meghalaya. Thus, the lake became popular by his name, Chandubi.

As per another story, Chandubi Lake caught the attention of a British officer who came to enjoy the sunset. He describes the lake where the sun sets or dub Joa in Assamese.
