It is said that the Khasis of Meghalaya used to perform religious rituals here to commemorate Chan-Ubleis. Thus, the lake was formerly called Chan-U Lei-dubi. As the years passed, the local Rabha –Kachari tribes of Assam referred to this lake as Chan-dubi.
