Rumtek Monastery

Rumtek Monastery or Dharma Chakra Centre is located in the Indian state of Sikkim. It is one of the largest and most significant monasteries in Sikkim, which is the perfect depiction of the religious and cultural heritage of Buddhism in India. This renowned monastery was originally built by Wangchuk Dorje, 9th Karmapa Lama in the mid-18th Century. It was rebuilt by Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, 16th Karmapa Lama, and is considered a shrine for Tibetan Buddhists. Moreover, the complex of the Gompa signifies the aim of the 16th Karmapa Lama, who wishes to spread the teachings of Buddha in the world.

One of the main attractions of this Gompa is the Golden Stupa, where several monks perform rituals and practice the Karma Kagyu lineage. The Stupa also constitutes precious relics of 16th Karmapa and the world’s unique religious scriptures. There is a massive prayer hall in the monastery, which is decorated with splendid wall murals, paintings, and thangkas. It also houses 1001 miniature golden models of Buddha. The main monastery is a 3-storeyed building with a golden sculpture on the top, which is an architectural marvel. It is one of the finest Gompas in the world.

Other attractions in Rumtek Monastery include a Buddhist shrine (main temple), Karma Shri Nalanda Institute (a college for Buddhist Higher Studies), nunnery, and protector’s shrine. You can also spot monks’ quarters inside the monastery.

By Air

Bagdogra Airport is the nearest airport, which serves Gangtok. It is located 126 km from the capital city. Shared taxis, cabs, and buses are easily available from the airport for Gangtok from where it is easy to reach the monastery.

By Rail

New Jalpaiguri railway station is the nearest and the major railhead situated near the Rumtek Monastery. This railhead is well-connected with the major cities of the country. From New Jalpaiguri, private and shared taxis, buses, and cabs are easily available for Gangtok.

By Road

The most economical option to reach Rumtek Monastery from Gangtok is to board a shared taxi, which runs from Gangtok Taxi Jeep Service Stand located on NH 10. There are private taxis and buses are also available from Gangtok for the monastery.
