Mount Mary Church Mumbai

The Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, also known as Mount Mary Church, is a Roman Catholic Church located in Bandra, Mumbai. The church overlooks the Arabian Sea on a small hill at an elevation of about 80 meters above sea level. Devotees from all across the world visit the church throughout the year. People strongly believe in the miraculous powers of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Therefore, they come from different faiths to pray to the Virgin Mary.

People of various faiths go to the Mount Mary Church, which has stood firm for centuries, to find serenity and tranquility. Small shops selling flowers, candles, and other religious offerings are on either side of the road leading to the church. The unique offerings are the wax statues offered for sale outside the chapel. People will ask Mother Mary for anything by giving her a wax figurine, such as a house, car, etc. The basilica is a magnificent but modest structure composed entirely of stone.

The Fair

On the first Sunday after September 8, the birthday of the Virgin Mary, the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated. A week-long celebration post-feast is locally known as the Bandra Fair. The fair is famous in Mumbai and is visited by thousands of people.

The entire area surrounding the church is decorated with ribbons and flowers during this fair. In addition, some stalls sell religious articles, snacks, and sweets. People also get to shop for wax figures of the Virgin Mary.

The statue of the Virgin Mary

The structure of the church is around 100 years old. However, the statue of Our Lady dates back to the 16th century. During the 16th century, Jesuit priests from Portugal brought this statue to Mumbai and constructed a chapel around it. In 1700, Arab pirates disfigured the statue of Our Lady by cutting off its right hand. In 1760, the church was again built, and the statue was substituted with a statue of Our Lady of Navigators placed in St. Andrew's church, which is located nearby. Later, the previous statue of Our Lady was restored.
